Mother’s Day started at 5:30am for a few of our stylists. Claudia, CJ, Emily, and Sara partnered with stylists from Madusalon and Benefit makeup artists to go to Hamilton Family Center with the mission of giving 25 amazing moms the best mother’s day ever! Here’s what they had to say about their experience.
Claudia: We had the honor of spending the morning with these wonderful ladies and and devoting our time to them. I am so humbled by this experience, and I can’t wait to do it again! My willingness and passion to want to help others comes from my mom; this wise women showed me the way to share with others and to give when others need!
CJ: It was really nice to be able to love on some Mommas since I couldn’t be with my own. She always told me that if you have enough, then you have enough to give.
Sara: It was great to be surrounded by so much love and caring on Mother’s Day. I loved seeing all the happy children and mothers enjoying their special day of pampering which we were able to help provide. An added bonus was that while collaborating with stylists from other salons, we were also able to share beauty tips and ideas.
Emily: It was heartwarming to see that not only were these mothers pampered with hair, but also with makeup, breakfast, and a violin serenade courtesy of a talented 10-year old. All of the hair dressers helped each other in order to have the mothers look their best for their special day. I would love to do this event again!!

Today we regretfully said goodbye to hair style icon Vidal Sassoon. After years of inspiration and innovative ideas and styles, his legacy will forever live on in the world. From humble beginnings Sassoon put forth all of his effort in the industry, starting as a shampoo boy at the age of 14 and continuing on to master the art of cutting hair and being known for defining the bob and so much more. His techniques changed the approach to hair care in the styling industry by focusing on the natural shape and movement of the client’s hair.
Outside of the salon world people might mainly be familiar with Sassoon because of the Vidal Sassoon product line, but that is only one side of his multifaceted love of hair. He was the subject of a 2010 documentary, Vidal Sassoon the Movie: How One Man Changed the World With a Pair of Scissors, which detailed his life and the influence he had in the beauty world. Sassoon will forever be a legend.

Bumble & bumble has come out with a new color line that uses innovative technology to protect hair color and make hair fibers impermeable to water, resisting washout and fading. With a color preserving complex designed to prevent fading and eliminate color washout, this shampoo protects the color’s integrity while prolonging its vibrancy and brilliance.
Wash with the shampoo, a sulfate-free cleanser helping to prevent color washout while revealing luster. Follow up with the conditioner that is a rich, moisture whip designed to seal, shine and keep all tones true. It can also be used for a deeper weekly treatment as a masque. Use the UV protective styling balm because it has heat and humidity protection and UV filters to protect hair from the elements while keeping tones true. Complete your style with the UV Protective Polish as an illuminating finisher that weightlessly seals, defines, adds shine, and showcases color. Whether or not you color your hair, you will benefit from the balm and polish.
In addition to offering this new line, Wak Shack Salon will also be using Bumble & bumble’s new Color Minded Pro Treatment during your color service. This treatment helps bind and seal the cuticle to ensure longer lasting color (for permanent colors) for up to forty shampoos.
Love your color; protect your color.

For those people who don’t think styling hair is a form of art, let me tell you about Sydney Guilaroff. Sydney was one of the first recognized and constantly praised stylists for MGM studios and movie stars off the studio set for more than forty years. He turned a blonde Lucille Ball into a famous redhead, popularized Judy Garland’s braids, and gave a distinct bob and bangs to Claudette Colbert; he was a craftsman, artist, and visionary ready to push the limits. During his career, he worked on over a thousand movies including Ben Hur, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, The Philadelphia Story, and, Some Like It Hot. Probably the movie that offered him the biggest and most exciting challenge was Marie Antoinette, which required 2000 court wigs, some complete with actual birds in cages, and 3000 lesser wigs for extras. Sydney’s work should take your breath away and will live on forever in classic films.

It’s safe to say that every bride wants to stand out and look absolutely stunning on her wedding day. To help achieve that goal, stylists featured in the April issue of American Salon are finding inspiration this season in the wedding dress and the bride’s natural look. The fabric and the design of the dress are definite influences for the style of the hair – fringe and lace styles seen on the runway were paired with soft-textured hair; on the other end of the spectrum, high slit dresses were matched with defined partings and sections in the hair. Giovanni Giuntoli, a Redken artist says, “In general, this season I saw a lot of natural-looking texture achieved by curling the hair, rough blow-dries and even letting hair dry naturally.” Other stylists are finding inspiration from red carpet trends of the season such as braids, headbands, and bohemian waves. While a bride wants to shine on her wedding day, she should still feel comfortable being herself – this can be achieved from simply adding the special touch of a headband or flower.
In the end, it is all about the bride. Brides, find your inspiration where you will, but remember to be yourself through it all; you look the best when you’re being you. Happy wedding season!
